Viper Club 1999 Racing Season Is Coming!

The planning for this seasons racing calendar is well under way with many new exciting ideas and programs.  First, this years club racing committee would like to thank Rich Hamliec for his outstanding leadership in organizing the racing program into a well-organized part of the club.  It's amazing, because we now have five people doing what Rich accomplished, mostly by himself.  This years racing committee includes: Seth Palatnik, David Blankenbaker, Sam Krauss, Don Langraf, and Dan Woods.  Our goal is to improve the program for this year, based on input received last season.

This years calendar is as follows:

Spring Tune-Up at Gingerman, Sat.- Sun. May 15-16

The Longest Day at Route 66, Wed. June 9th

Roanoke Motors Triple Crown Challenge - Drag Race/Autocross at Route 66, Sat. July 10.

Viper- Ferrari War - At Gingerman, Sat.-Sun. August 21-22. Also final leg of Triple Crown: road race.

PictureThe Spring Tune-Up is a new event for the club, added this year to enable all Viper owners to experience performance driving on a track.  Experienced drivers will be available to provide instruction and coaching to new drivers, who will have their own private sessions on the track.  Gingerman has been a friendly place for many of our accomplished road warriors to learn the basics of performance driving, who only several years ago never had driven on a track.  This weekend will also include driving sessions for our experienced drivers with timing, scoring, and trophies.  Drivers will be placed into groups, based on their experience and the performance enhancing modifications to the car. The event is being planned to allow for MAXIMUM track time for all, and thanks to very generous financial support from club member Irving Drobny's National Accident Insurance Underwriters, Roanoke Motors, and Autoform Development, this two day event will cost you only $320 if you sign up early.  Not only will you have a great time, but this event is value driven.

We are pleased to announce that this years Longest Day will be held at Route 66, in Joliet, IL.  Route 66, a $25 million dollar facility, opened to the public in 1998.  This location is less than 1 hr from downtown Chicago, and even closer to the Western Chicago suburbs.  We toured the facility and it is awesome!   This facility has a world class drag strip, a 2 mile, 11 turn road course, and a huge parking area that is used for an autocross (cone race) course.    The Longest Day competition includes all three venues: a road race (individual timed runs, no wheel to wheel),  autocross (cone course timed individual runs), and a traditional drag race.  We plan to complete all three venues in one 10 hour period, starting at 8:30 am.  Trophies will be awarded at the days end. Despite the higher cost of renting this facility (compared to Byron last year), thanks again to financial support of Irving Drobny, Roanoke Motors, and Autoform development, we  are able to offer this event at a reduced cost compared to last year!  So sign up early.  Spots are limited.  The early bird price for this event is $195.

PictureThe Triple Crown , which began two years ago, has developed into an exciting club competition, with coverage nationally by Chrysler, and other motorsports publications.  Through this event, many of our Viper owners have improved their driving skills, and learned to enjoy performance driving.  Roanoke Motors has continued their generous  financial support to help underwrite this event.

Like the Longest Day, the Triple Crown includes 3 different competitions:  a road race (individually timed), autocross (cone course), and drag race. Drivers compete within a particular group (class), based on the Viper and any performance enhancing modifications to the car.  Drivers earn points, based on their results within their class.  The driver with the most points after the final event, is deemed champion.  At last years final competition, we had a four way tie prior to completing the event!

The first two legs of the Triple Crown will be held at Route 66, on Saturday, July 10.  We will first compete in an autocross (individually timed, cone race), and then move on to the drag strip.  The SCCA will be arranging our autocross and this will be a private course for us only! No more sharing and waiting for others to finish before we get to go autocrossing.  Same thing for the drag strip.  We will have a private session of drag racing at this new, $25 million dollar facility.  During this Triple Crown event, we will also allow those not competing in the Triple Crown to participate in Drag racing and/or Cone racing.  We will have a single elimination competition for the drag racing, separate from the Triple Crown.  All Triple Crown drivers will automatically (free) be able to participate in this competition.

The final leg of the Triple Crown will be held at Gingerman Raceway, August 21, the same weekend as the Viper-Ferrari War.  The road race leg (individually timed runs), will be held on Saturday, with the winner of the Triple Crown announced at our banquet that evening.  The early bird price for the Triple Crown (the entire event) is $475. Triple Crown participants are automatically enrolled (free) for the entire Viper-Ferrari War discussed below.

PictureThe Viper-Ferrari War is again being held at Gingerman Raceway, August 21-22.  This 11 turn, 2 mile track is approximately two hours from Chicago.  Last year 60 cars converged on this track for a weekend of practice, timed runs, and great food.  This year we will cap the event to maximize track time for participants.  For two full days, drivers will compete within designated groups (classes).  In addition to our regular class groups, we plan again to have a woman's group, and a "rookie" division for those wanting to experience the track, but in a noncompetitive format.  Experienced drivers will be available to assist the rookie class.

Generous financial support for the Viper Ferrari War event has already been pledged by Irving Drobny, Roanoke Motors, Super Viper Systems (SVS), and Autoform Development. While our costs for Gingerman have gone up this year, this financial support has enabled us to keep our cost competitive.  The early bird price for Viper- Ferrari is $375. Please contact any member of the racing committee with any questions about the upcoming season.  If  you would like to receive an application for any of the above events, contact Sam Krauss at (847) 290-0988.  Sam is handling event registration.

As you can see, the racing schedule provides all Viper owners the opportunity to come out and experience performance driving.  We hope to see many new rookie drivers this year, and our usual experienced drivers at all of our events.  Please sign up early, because we expect our events to sell out.  Also, the early bird discounts can help you save money!
